Father's Day History

Father's Day celebrates the role and dedication of fathers around Australia. The day provides people with an opportunity to express their gratitude and appreciation for all the sacrifices that a father makes in raising and supporting his children and family. A father can be biological, adopted or even symbolic in nature.

Unlike many other countries, Father's Day in Australia is celebrated on the first Sunday of September. Although it is commonly celebrated privately within families, there are many communal events on the day that highlight the importance of fathers in society. The day was first celebrated in the United States after a woman named Sonora Dodds sought to create a holiday for men similar to Mother's Day in 1910. Since then, it has spread to other countries who have also wished to honour fathers and father-figures.
